Protaetia (Netocia) trojana Gory and Percheron, 1833

English

Robust body: 17-25mm length, the species is well distinct from the other species of the Netocia sub-genus, with variable chromatism but with dominant green and with the pronotum and the elytra more or less largely by white maculae.

The area of distribution of Potosia (Netocia) trojana is large and fragmented on several geographical sectors giving origin at 5 principal subspecies: trojana s.str. distributed in Greece and Bulgaria, trojana ssp. godeti Gory and Percheron, 1833 distributed in the east of Anatolia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaidjan and Iran, trojana ssp. maura Bedel, 1889 of NW of Algeria, trojana ssp. ephesia Tauzin, 1993 distributed in the Western coast of Anatolia, and trojana ssp. syriaca Reitter, 1891 present in SE part of the Mediterranean: South Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel but also Libya where the subspecies was discovered near the city of Wadi bel Gadir in 2003 (J.C. Rigenbach) on a berry of Arum cyrenaicum.

In the Levant, the rare and localized subspecies P.trojana syriaca, is morphologically characterized by its shining upper surface. It presents also particular variations in the southern limit of its area of distribution: the ab. galathea Reitter, 1898 known of Israel and Jordan and characterized by a colour green purple and a strong extension of the white bands on the edges of the pronotum, the elytra and pygidium and the ab. doriae Reiche (1871) blackish/blue. The larvae generally develop in not very wooded areas, in various composts apart from the cavities of trees, often in the soil near roots and broken up bulbs of Onopordum. The imagos can be observed from April to July on Onopordum and Verbascum.
