Pentodon variolopunctatus deserti Heyden, 254 (Heteronychus)

Among the genus Pentodon species, P.variolopunctatus Fairmaire, 1879 can be recognized having: pygidium on either sides of the middle with a big obtuse knob, frontal suture fine, sharp, frons with one tubercle, clypeus triangular with two small teeth (from Endroedi).

Two subspecies are known: P.variolopunctatus variolopunctatus and P.variolopunctatus deserti.

The subspecies P.variolopunctatus deserti has specimens smaller, slender and more shining, clypeal teeth very small, punctures of elytra much finer, a fourth tooth on anterior tibiae is more distinct, apex of paramera very strongly and irregularly dilatated. It is distributed in North Africa, Sinai, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
